Designing a New Foundation: Spotify for Desktop by Spotify Design Spotify Design

We have to put ourselves in their shoes and think about how they experience something in their everyday life. A big thing to keep in mind is that when using Spotify, phones are often in pockets and people look at the screen in quick, split-second moments. Plugins, widgets, and tooling—the second edition of our series on the future of design systems. Here, we chat with folks across the industry on how plugins, widgets, and tooling are changing the landscape, and what they hope for the future. Variables, one of Figma’s newest features, help you streamline designs and connect more closely to code, but what do they tell us about larger shifts in the industry?

Crafting Aha!! Moments: Lessons from Live Experience Creators

We love to create great experiences and make connections between listeners and creators. It allows users to follow their friends, see what they’re listening to, and share songs, playlists, and podcasts with others. Users can also see what their friends are listening to and get recommendations based on their friends’ listening habits.

Spotify Green should only ever sit on white, black, or a non-duotoned photograph. Don't use Spotify Green with a color from the brand palette or a duotoned image. It's important that the appearance of the logo remains consistent. Its orientation, color, and composition should remain as indicated in this document — there are no exceptions.

Spotifiers across the globe can also spot painted ‘podcats,’ hiding among indoor plants or climbing up the walls. Originally inspired by a typo in an email between Acrylicize and Spotify team members that misspelled ‘podcasts,’ each of the cats is painted to represent a different podcast in Spotify’s catalog. While administrative and tactical work will always be part of an operational team, we also need to keep a strategic mindset, which is why we need to be closely aligned with Spotify’s overall leadership and design strategy. You need to  be able to cope well with ambiguity to work here as change happens constantly. We do that by breaking down our programs into smaller pieces of value and regularly reviewing and prioritising our design ops backlog.

Designing for Accessibility: An Analysis of Spotify’s Features for Users with Disabilities

Billions of users are used to swiping through a dozen things they don’t like before landing on one they do. And in this new look, every song or playlist or podcast gets a momentary extra chance to grab you. The company is committed to improving the user experience by listening to user feedback, analyzing usage data, and experimenting with new features and designs. Throughout 2021 and 2022, Spotify opened the doors to 19 offices from Toronto to Singapore to London. Others, like its US headquarters in New York, were reimagined with new artwork, workspaces, and signage.

In the examples below you can see our brand’s new DNA  — bursts, action lines, and hand-drawn highlights — starting to take shape. Those accents exuded the personality we were looking for, and were refined and carried over to the final design system. And a diluted, design-by-committee, trying-to-please-everyone-but-actually-pleasing-no-one brand was #1 on our “How do we know if we’ve blown it?

We've also been able to deliver more personalized experiences to our listeners. The prospect of sharing patterns and code across the Desktop app and Web Player was alluring to the team before this project started, and as we progressed, we were able to reap the benefits as we rolled features out. There was a noticeable shift in how much faster we were able to design and build reusable components. Foundational elements like menus and buttons were applied throughout the system with greater ease than ever before. Since we no longer had to design for two unique platforms, the team could invest more deeply in accessibility, micro-interactions, and improving other parts of the product. As previously mentioned, a big opportunity for the Design team during this project was aligning our Web and Desktop experiences.

Spotify: Apple has ‘defied’ the EU by blocking latest update with pricing info [U: Apple response]

Spotify has been on a seemingly relentless quest to nudge people toward content that’s more differentiated and more profitable, which often meant making it harder to listen to music. That’s why the app’s new design seems to be in part meant to create more dedicated space for all those new kinds of content. Spotify has for years tried to find ways to put podcasts and music and everything else side by side but seems to be recognizing that the best answer is to give each thing more space to breathe. In New York, each of the 16 floors’ elevator bays bears a mural from a local artist. For three of the murals, Acrylicize and Spotify commissioned works by students at New York art programs, including Simiao Wang, who graduated from the School of Visual Arts with an MFA in 2021.

That’s why the music giant chose to submit an update and stick with the legacy App Store system. Get inspired on this episode of the Design and Hospitality podcast series with Chris Barnes, Owner and Founder at Broadway Interiors as he takes us through his interior design journey. Whether you’re a bigger artist or just developing, Spotify for Artists helps you find your fans and market better to them.

In the intricate orchestration of creating a design system as expansive and immersive as Spotify’s, cross-platform is just one facet of the larger gem. You might even say that our systems are as much about breadth (across platforms) as they are about depth (across functions). When coordinating design and build phases across several teams, the variations in release schedules, roadmaps, and timing can make things harder.

Below is a positional ranking of the best remaining undrafted prospects following the conclusion of Round 7. Pick any image to create AI-powered designs by automatically removing backgrounds, enhancing colors, adjusting smart shadows, and so much more. Customize your artist profile, create videos and visuals, and bring the story behind your music to life. For shuffle play the user will only be able to see a content summary of the playlist/album and then start shuffle playback. The user can't pick a particular song to play, it will start playback in shuffle.

There's also a new keyboard shortcuts modal that can be opened with the question mark key (?) or command + forward-slash (⌘/). Many of these changes weren't possible in the old Desktop app, and while we still have areas to improve, the team has worked toward building accessibility into our design and development cycle. Additionally, we reworked our messaging and communication surfaces to better align with Spotify's UX Writing voice and tone guidance. Some web components are only used in experiences for artists or podcasters (for example, the Spotify for Artists app may need a special navigation pattern or table layout). With the Encore framework, we can keep custom design elements in a local system so all the teams working on Spotify for Artists can share them.
